Locating Maps in UO Libraries

This guide describes how to locate and access physical maps in the UO Libraries' Map Collections. It highlights some of the more heavily used types of maps. In some cases it points to alternative online resources as well.

Metsker Map Company

In 1901 Charles F. Metsker founded a map making business in Tacoma, Washington. His original focus was on producing custom maps for surveyors, logging companies, and real estate firms. By the 1930s, Metsker Maps had expanded to Seattle and Charles Metsker began creating a series of unique maps that were highly accurate and customized to the needs of the region. These maps included detailed representations of Pacific Northwest counties, cities, and natural features, earning a reputation for their precision and quality. The Map collection contains many maps produced by Charles Metsker and the Metsker Map Company.

Metsker Real Estate Atlases

Metsker Map Company produced county real estate atlases in the 1930s through 1980s. Each county atlas shows property lines and lists the property owner at the time the atlas was produced. Use LibrarySearch to find out what counties and years we have in our collection.  You can do a keyword search on the words metsker and atlas and the county name to find out what years we have for a county. Metsker County Atlases are in the locked collection and you will need request to view them using the Mediated Access for Maps form. We are happy to arrange for you to use these items in Knight Library.

Oregon State University has an even more extensive collection of Metsker atlases of Oregon. See
Metsker's Atlases of Oregon Counties, 1929-1988 for more information.
