Locating Maps in UO Libraries

This guide describes how to locate and access physical maps in the UO Libraries' Map Collections. It highlights some of the more heavily used types of maps. In some cases it points to alternative online resources as well.

US Map Call Numbers

Maps in our collection are organized by Library of Congress call numbers which group maps by geographic area. Call Numbers used for individual maps range from G3180 to G9989. Maps of the entire United States of America or sub areas are assigned LC call numbers G3700 to G4384.  G3700 are general maps of the United States. Maps in the range of G4210 to G4294 are of the Pacific and Mountain Region and it's individual states. Maps in this range with call numbers G4290 to G4294 are of Oregon and sub regions of Oregon. Below is a map showing the call numbers for the different US Regions and States.

Call numbers for Non-US Maps

LC Call Numbers for maps that cover areas outside of the United States also begin with "G" followed by a different range of numbers. Below is a map showing the call numbers of regions of the world and countries outside of the United States.World outline map with countries and regions labelled with Library of Congress G call numbers

Note the call number range for Greenland is G3380 to G3384 and for Canada is G3400 to (G3612), which are outside the range of US call numbers.

Atlas Call Numbers

Most atlases also have Library of Congress call numbers that begin with G. However, atlases have a different call number range (G1000 to G3122). The exception is when the specialized subject of the atlas is considered more important than the geographic coverage. For example, the Atlas of the World's Languages in Danger is assigned the call number P40.5.L33 A841 2010 which places it on the shelf with other books about  endangered languages rather than next to world atlases.

Since all atlases in our collections are listed in the Library Catalog, it is not as important that they all be grouped by geographic area so they can be easily shelf-browsed. You can browse the map atlas shelves by call number, but may miss out locating other relevant atlases shelved elsewhere in the Libraries.

Using the Catalog to Identify Call Number Areas to Browse

In addition to using the posted maps and lists to figure out what call numbers to browse, you can use the Library's Online advanced search catalog, LibrarySearch. In the advanced search, search the subject field for a place name and the word maps and limit your search to just UO Libraries. This should pull up all maps and atlases of that specific area that UO has listed in the catalog. You can then look at the call numbers of the maps listed to see if they have a common beginning call number.  For example if you search on Eugene maps, you will see that the call number for Eugene sheet maps begins with G4294 .E8. Thus, you can go to G9294 .E8 in the general maps, mini maps, and folded maps to browse the cataloged and uncatalogued maps we have of Eugene, Oregon.

See Search the Catalog for Maps for more tips on finding maps and atlases.
