Locating Maps in UO Libraries

This guide describes how to locate and access physical maps in the UO Libraries' Map Collections. It highlights some of the more heavily used types of maps. In some cases it points to alternative online resources as well.

Library of Congress Call Number System

The Library of Congress (LC) numbering is a classification system originally developed to arrange the books in the Library of Congress. It is used by many other libraries, especially large academic libraries in the United States. It is the system used to organize the Map Collection and many of the major collections in the University of Oregon Libraries

The system assigns each item a letter/number designation that groups the items by subject when things are arranged by LC number on the shelves.  In the case of maps, the LC number groups them by geographic area, making shelf browsing for maps of a specific place easy, even if the item is not listed in LibrarySearch. (Many of our maps are not listed in LibrarySearch, but they are all organized by LC number on the shelves.)
