Master the Tidyverse Workshop Series

Master the Tidyverse is a workshop series on using packages to simplify data cleaning, analysis, and visualization in the R programming language. Click on the tabs above to find out more about the six workshops in the Master the Tidyverse Workshop sequence: R/RStudio, ggplot2, tidyr, readr, dplyr part 1, and dplyr part 2. You can attend any workshop in the series without attending all of them; however, if you skip ahead in the series we recommend reviewing the pre-requisites (listed under each tab) to make sure you are prepared. If you would like to schedule a version of this sequence for your lab, student group, or as part of a class, reach out to us at DataServices@uoregon.edu.

Master the Tidyverse: Introduction to R and RStudio

Software: R, RStudio
Duration: 60 min

Room:

Varies. Often held in Knight Library 267b or the Knight Library DREAM Lab workshop space.

Who should take this workshop: Anyone who needs to clean, analyze, or visualize quantitative data and is interested in doing so using a free programming language.
Prerequisites:
  • Comfortable installing and exploring new software
  • Able to write one- and two-lines of code in any language (or up for something new)
  • Before class, please
    • If you can, install R and RStudio on your laptop prior to class: if you need help, attend an Install Night. Otherwise you can use a library laptop.
    • Create an rstudio.cloud account
Skills Taught / Learning Outcomes:
  • Setting up R and RStudio
  • Overview of how to use RStudio
  • How to perform basic math in R

Additional Training Materials: Supplementary materials include a ggplot cheat sheet and the R Markdown document with the workshop exercises.
Accessibility:

Workshop classrooms are wheelchair accessible and include at least some chairs without arms.

Base R is accessible to screen readers without modification, according to this linked report. While this class is taught using RStudio, which will not have an interface accessible to screen readers until some time in 2020, students can easily participate in the course using the screen reader-compatible base R.
