In contrast with its relative lack of popularity in the United States, elsewhere, professional soccer is a hugely popular sport whose key players rival movie stars in popularity and influence. For many Latinos, especially those who emigrated to the United States, it is the game of choice. While Latino players are still not a major force in U.S. soccer, Latino fans certainly are, comprising, by one estimate, 45 percent of Major League Soccer attendees. Brazil's victory in the 1994 World Cup is the latest chapter in an extensive history of the world's most popular game in South America. If you attend a soccer match in Buenos Aires of the local Atlanta Athletic Club, you will likely hear the rival teams chanting anti-Semitic slogans. This is because the neighborhood of Villa Crespo has long been considered a Jewish district, and its soccer team, Club Atlético Atlanta, has served as an avenue of integration into Argentine culture. Through the lens of this neighborhood institution, Raanan Rein offers an absorbing social history of Jews in Latin America. Since the Second World War, there has been a conspicuous Jewish presence among the fans, administrators and presidents of the Atlanta soccer club. For the first immigrant generation, belonging to this club was a way of becoming Argentines. For the next generation, it was a way of maintaining ethnic Jewish identity. Now, it is nothing less than family tradition for third generation Jewish Argentines to support Atlanta. The soccer club has also constituted one of the few spaces where both Jews and non-Jews, affiliated Jews and non-affiliated Jews, Zionists and non-Zionists, have interacted. The result has been an active shaping of the local culture by Jewish Latin Americans to their own purposes. This book aims to use soccer as a tool to understand key elements of Brazil's history from the overthrown of the Monarchy in 1889 to the 1930 Revolution that brought Getulio Vargas to power--the so called First Republic. More specifically, this book will show that the advent of soccer and the reactions of the elites toward this sport can be understood primarily as a consequence of the desire of the new Republic--crucially influenced by racist attitudes integral to Social Darwinism--to be included within the white civilized world. Thus, racism during the early years of football in that country was influenced by the eurocentric views of the world in racial terms and the Brazilian elites desire to be accepted by the civilized white world.

Citizens and Sportsmen: Fútbol and Politics in Twentieth-Century Chile by
Fútbol, or soccer as it is called in the United States, is the most popular sport in the world. Millions of people schedule their lives and build identities around it. The World Cup tournament, played every four years, draws an audience of more than a billion people and provides a global platform for displays of athletic prowess, nationalist rhetoric, and commercial advertising. Fútbol is ubiquitous in Latin America, yet few academic histories of the sport exist, and even fewer focus on its relevance to politics in the region. To fill that gap, this book uses amateur fútbol clubs in Chile to understand the history of civic associations, popular culture, and politics. In Citizens and Sportsmen, Brenda Elsey argues that fútbol clubs integrated working-class men into urban politics, connected them to parties, and served as venues of political critique. In this way, they contributed to the democratization of the public sphere. Elsey shows how club members debated ideas about class, ethnic, and gender identities, and also how their belief in the uniquely democratic nature of Chile energized state institutions even as it led members to criticize those very institutions. Furthermore, she reveals how fútbol clubs created rituals, narratives, and symbols that legitimated workers' claims to political subjectivity. Her case study demonstrates that the relationship between formal and informal politics is essential to fostering civic engagement and supporting democratic practices.

This book explores the pivotal role that football played as part of Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos' national unity project centred on the peace process with the FARC. Football has huge political and social capital in Latin America, and has often been rhetorically deployed by governments for various ends; rarely, however, has football's power and potential been used in such a deliberate, strategic and active way towards a national peace process and targeted such enduring divisions that have historically impeded a sense of a united nation and national identity. Football in Colombia is understood popularly as one of the few things capable of uniting the country, a belief that Santos seized upon as the national team had a successful campaign in the 2014 World Cup. This first book on Colombian football in English explores previous iterations of football nationalism in the country, including the El Dorado and 'Narcofootball' eras, before analysing Santos' three-pronged strategy empowering professional and amateur football, including the use of political speeches and Twitter, legislation and public policy, and Sport for Development and Peace campaigns, with a particular focus on football in the FARC demobilisation and reincorporation camps following the historic peace agreement.
