UO LibrarySearch and Summit

UO logo with "LibrarySearch" catalog name

LibrarySearch can be used to find items (books, videos, primary source materials, etc.) including government documents and publications that we hold in our collections. Select 'UO + Summit' from the drop-down menu on the right of the search box to include or exclude articles.

Summit (or Orbis Cascade) is a group of academic libraries, including UO, in the Pacific Northwest that have a resource-sharing partnership, so you are able to request items from those libraries, as well.

Inter-Library Loan (ILL) and WorldCat

If you use LibrarySearch and you find that you need something that isn't available in the UO Libraries/Summit collections, you can use Inter-Library Loan (ILL) to request it be borrowed from another institution. This service is free to UO students/staff/faculty and we highly recommend it. The link below will walk you through the steps of submitting your request. Physical books are generally delivered with 4-5 days, and you can also request digital scans of a single chapter or article which are generally delivered within 24 hours.

Another option for finding materials not in UO's collections is to use WorldCat. WorldCat provides access to the catalogs of libraries from around the world. The database contains millions of bibliographic records describing books, journals, maps, musical scores, recordings, videos, manuscripts, etc. and can be used to access materials. If you sign in with your UO information, you will be given a link to request an item we don't have through ILL (which will likely take you back to UO's catalog for you to fill out the form).

Finding Government & IGO Publications Using Google

Find Government & IGO Publications using Google

One way is to use Google Advanced Search

  • Enter your topic's keywords and then, in the Search by Site or Domain box, enter the domain extension for the country or IGO
    • Here is a list of country domain extensions.
    • If there is one, you can also use the government domain abbreviation to narrow your results to official government publications.
      • E.g., you can use: '.gouv.fr' for France, or '.gob.mx' for Mexico.  You may need to some searching using just the country domain extension to find out what the government domain extension is. Searching on the keyword 'ministry' is a good way to find a government site.
    • Although some governments publish a lot of information in English, most documents will be in the language(s) of that country and thus must be searched for in that language.
  • Domain extensions for a few relevant inter-governmental organizations:
    • European Union = .europa.eu
    • NATO = .nato.int
    • OECD = .oecd.org
    • United Nations = .un.org
