Pacific Islander Studies

Since 1971, Amerasia Journal has been the leading interdisciplinary journal in Asian American and Pacific Islander studies. For almost five decades, Amerasia Journal has played an indispensable role in establishing Asian American studies as a viable and relevant field of scholarship, teaching, community service, and public discourse. According to founding publisher Don T. Nakanishi, Amerasia Journal “has benefited from and reflected a wide array of profound social changes that have occurred among Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders—be it their unprecedented growth and diversification, or their ever-increasing levels of access, representation, and achievement in American society’s institutions and sectors that had long excluded, marginalized, or demonized them.”

With editorial offices at the Center for Pacific Islands Studies, The Contemporary Pacific covers a wide range of disciplines with the aim of providing comprehensive coverage of contemporary developments in the entire Pacific Islands region, including Melanesia, Micronesia, and Polynesia. It features refereed, readable articles that examine social, economic, political, ecological, and cultural topics, along with political reviews, book and media reviews, resource reviews, and a dialogue section with interviews and short essays. Each issue highlights the work of a Pacific Islander artist.

Cultural Survival Quarterly was founded as a society newsletter. Over the last 40-plus years, it has become an authoritative resource on important issues that affect indigenous and ethnic minority communities around the world. Recent topics covered include the preservation of the Yuchi language; indigenous-led philanthropic funding; and indigenous-led land conservation initiatives. This magazine publishes thought-provoking essays, book reviews, and photographs with the intent of expanding public understanding about indigenous rights and cultures, with writers from indigenous communities or working closely with indigenous groups.

IIPJ welcomes scholarly articles that relate directly to Indigenous Peoples and have policy relevance. An article may focus on a single group, community, country, or population, but it must have policy implications or lessons that are relevant to other Indigenous Peoples or countries. Work that involves international comparison is a priority.

The International Journal of Indigenous Health (IJIH) was established to advance knowledge and understanding to improve Indigenous health. The Journal seeks to bring knowledge from diverse intellectual traditions together with a focus on culturally diverse Indigenous voices, methodologies and epistemology. The Journal is peer-reviewed, online, open-access and shares innovative health research across disciplines, Indigenous communities, and countries.

Island Studies Journal (ISJ) is a diamond (non-fee charging) open access academic journal dedicated to the interdisciplinary study of islands and archipelagos.

This peer reviewed Journal was created in response to community requests for information about research that has been conducted among their people. The focus of this publication is to obtain articles about research conducted with Native American, Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian, Maori populations- written for laypeople.

The Journal of Indigenous Social Development (JISD), formerly the Journal of Indigenous Voices in Social Work (JIVSW), is a peer reviewed, web-based, open access journal published twice a year by the Myron B. Thompson School of Social Work at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa. The journal is dedicated to improving social work practice and expanding knowledge relevant to indigenous peoples and communities in which they live.

(Formerly Pimatisiwin Journal) The Journal of Indigenous Wellbeing is a peer-reviewed, open-access, scholarly online journal that shares multi-disciplinary Indigenous knowledge and research experience amongst Indigenous health professionals, leaders, researchers and community members.

The Journal of New Zealand & Pacific Studies is a trans-disciplinary publication focusing on the range of issues and subjects which are relevant to New Zealand and Pacific studies, with a priority for the latter given to Polynesia and the South Pacific.

The Journal of Pacific History is a refereed international journal serving historians, prehistorians, anthropologists and others interested in the study of mankind in the Pacific Islands (including Hawaii and New Guinea), and is concerned generally with political, economic, religious and cultural factors affecting human presence there.

The Journal of South Pacific Law is a specialised online journal of the University of the South Pacific School of Law. We publish a wide range of legal materials with a focus on laws of the South Pacific region and on issues of interest to legal researchers within the region. All articles appearing in the Journal are refereed by scholars with extensive background in the region and its diverse legal systems.

Language and Linguistics in Melanesia (originally Kivung) is a peer-reviewed linguistic journal which has historically provided an effective forum for linguistic thought in Melanesia and the wider South Pacific region. LLM Online seeks to publish original articles dealing with the languages of Papua New Guinea and Melanesia. It is equally concerned with the regional creole languages, and with the application of linguistic research to language teaching.

Locale: The Pacific Journal of Regional Food Studies is an open-access online journal. It combines peer-reviewed academic articles with industry forums, debates and photo essays. The journal welcomes contributions from the breadth of food and drinks related research.

MAI Journal is an open access journal that publishes multidisciplinary peer-reviewed articles around indigenous knowledge and development in the context of Aotearoa New Zealand. We aim to publish scholarly articles that substantively engage with intellectual indigenous scholarship.

The Pacific Studies Journal is a publication produced by the Nāpela Center and has served the research and scholarly community since 1977. Twenty-five years of successful publication has proven that the journal fills an important need. Additionally, the journal has helped unite a geographically disparate group of scholars. In addition to its interdisciplinary strength, the journal has several other notable features.
