LibGuides Instructions and Guidelines

An internal guide for users of LibGuides within the UO library

Overview

Each Term

  • Use the Link Checker (under Tools in the top bar) to review links in your guides. If you have links embedded in text blocks, you will need to check those manually as the Link Checker cannot scan them.

Every Six Months

  • Review guide contents for accuracy
  • Make sure screencaps and written instructions reflect current database interfaces as changes may have occurred

Summer Each Year

  • Review usage statistics and delete unnecessary pages and unused assets
  • Update Book assets with updated editions (if relevant)
  • Delete unused personal assets from Asset Library

Before Major Changes

  • Create an HTML backup of a guide before deleting it or making major changes

Statistics

LibGuides can show you not only how often each page of a guide is used, but how many times each link (as long as it's added as a link, not as a link in text) has been clicked.

If a guide or asset on a Guide is showing extremely low usage, consider deleting it.

Unused Assets

Periodically review your Asset Library and delete unused items. This keeps the system tidy, and removes them from the link checking process.

Backing up a Guide

When making significant changes to a guide, it's a good idea to download an HTML backup of the guide before making changes, in case you want to compare the changes to the previous version.
