Write Descriptive Links

Avoid - Click Here, Read More

Use - Please see the borrowing policy.

Do not use color alone to convey meaning

Avoid using color only - Do not select subjects.

Use a phrase and/or formatting - Important - Do not select subjects.

Create Meaningful Alt Text for Images

Avoid - Man Standing

Use - The writer Ernest Hemingway standing on his front porch at his house in Key West, Florida at sunset.

Decorative Images do not Require Alternative Text

Example – images of book covers

Images that do not convey content or are redundant to content that is already conveyed in text must be given an empty value (alt=""). Another way to think about it is how does the image relate to text that appears next to and around it. In the example below you would not need to include alt text because the text that appears next to the image is already part of the image.

Does not require alt text

The Old Man and the sea by Ernest Hemingway
This was the last book that Hemingway wrote and was one of his most read books.
