Getting Started Using UO Libraries for First Year and Transfer Students

This guide is intended for new UO undergraduates and offers an overview of library resources, spaces, and services that you can take advantage of as a student.

What Do Librarians Do?

Librarians do lots of things, like purchase library materials, teach classes, and advise your professors on where to publish their scholarship. But one of the primary jobs of librarians at universities like UO is to help you with your research!

Librarians can consult with you about your research assignments or projects. We can help you:

  • Refine your topic
  • Develop a search strategy
  • Identify the best databases to search
  • Find and evaluate information
  • Track down a dataset
  • Find a book in the library or access an e-book
  • Cite your sources
  • And ... do lots of other things as well!

There are librarians who specialize in each subject area taught at UO. So there is a librarian for your major and for every course you are taking.  There are also librarians who help you do specific kinds of things, like manage research data and use statistical methods.

Get in Touch with a Librarian

You can reach out directly to the subject librarians to get help. Or, you can send a question to us through the research help form and the librarian most qualified to work with you will reach out.  You can also chat with us 24/7!

Do not hesitate to get in touch. This is what we are here for.

Are Tutors Available in the Library?

Yes! The Tutoring and Academic Engagement Center (TAEC) offers free tutoring services in Math, Writing, Language, and Sciences on the 4th floor of Knight Library. There is also a homework help service in the Mathematics Library for students taking lower-level math classes. Here is some info:
