Start Tutorial: Understanding Generative AI
In this course, you will develop foundational AI literacy skills. You will take a close and critical look at Generative AI - exploring what it is, what it does, and how it really works. You will learn a framework for effective prompting, discover why it is important to use AI carefully and thoughtfully, practice evaluating AI-generated information, and consider some of the ethical issues surrounding AI use. Finally, you will learn how to make sense of your instructors' expectations surrounding AI use for your courses and consider questions surrounding academic integrity and AI use.
This course is a basic introduction to Generative AI, with a focus on its use in research and writing. It is intended for undergraduate students although it may be useful to others as well.

By the end of this module, you will be able to:
Explain what Generative AI is and summarize the key processes that enable it to produce content.
Construct an effective prompt using the CLEAR framework.
Evaluate AI generated output by using lateral reading.
Describe ethical implications of AI use.
Demonstrate responsibility in academic work by understanding instructors’ policies on generative AI use and appropriately citing content created with Generative AI tools.
