This guide will walk users through the process of downloading and installing R and RStudio.

What is RStudio?

RStudio is an IDE (Integrated Development Environment) created for use with the R programming language. RStudio provides a relatively easy to use GUI (graphic user interface) for the R programming language. RStudio is open source software and can be used as a desktop application or as a server/enterprise version. For more information on RStudio please consult:

 

Installing RStudio

In order to install RStudio, you need to have already installed R 2.11.1 or higher. Directions to install R are provided previously in this LibGuide. To install RStudio for Windows, start out at RStudio (https://www.rstudio.com/products/rstudio/download/).

1. Under "Installers for Supported Platforms" select RStudio 1.0.44-Windows Vista/7/8/10

2. Open the downloaded .exe file 

3. A dialog box will appear. Run the installation file.

4. When the R Setup Wizard opens select Next

5. Click and accept the default install location by selecting Next

6. Continue to follow the instructions given in the R Setup Wizard. You can safely use the default settings by continuing to select Next

1. Under "Installers for Supported Platforms" select RStudio 1.0.44-Mac OS X 10.6+(64-bit)

2. Open the downloaded .dng file 

3. Continue to follow the instructions given. You can safely use the default settings by continuing to select Next

4. Drag the RStudio icon into the Applications folder

Downloading R for Linux is more complicated than either Windows or Mac installation. If you are a Ubuntu user, This Post provides an explanation on getting the most current version of RStudio on your system. This tutorial will show users how to install both R and RStudio using the command line.

Ubuntu users can also use the Ubuntu Software Center to download and install R. 

Opening RStudio

Once installed, opening RStudio on Windows is very simple. 

1. Select the Windows icon on the bottom of the task bar

2. Select All Programs

3. Scroll through your programs until you see a folder called RStudio. Select this folder

4. Select RStudio

 You are now ready to use RStudio!

Once installed, opening RStudio on Mac is very simple. 

1. Go to the Applications folder

2. Find and select the RStudio icon

 You are now ready to use RStudio!

Once installed, opening RStudio on Linux is very simple in comparison to the download/installation process. 

1. First, select the Ubuntu Software folder

2. Search for RStudio

3. Select the RStudio icon to open the program 

Note: to lock RStudio to your launcher, right click the RStudio logo. Select Lock to Launcher

The RStudio icon will now be displayed on your dock. To open, select the icon from the dock
