ICPSR: Finding and Using ICPSR Data

This guide is an introduction to to the Inter-University Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR).

Searching for Data

To search the ICPSR archive, go to the ICPSR home page and choose “Find Data” from the main menu OR Start Here.  On the “Find Data” page there are two main ways to search the ICPSR holdings:

  1. Search Engine: You can use keywords or type in a research question to find data on the topic in which you are interested.
  2. Browse: In the Browse box you will find various browsing options. For example, you can browse the archive by topic or by the geographical coverage of each study. Most of these data sets are publicly available, but others require you to fill out an application to request the data and submit a data protection plan. The libraries can assist you with requesting restricted-use data (for more information, click here).
