Why should I use ORCiD?

Use ORCID to take control of your online academic profile, & disambiguate yourself online.

  • Ensure consistent, reliable attribution of your work and protect your scholarly identity.
  • ORCiD is the most widely adopted cross platform research identifier.
  • Many publishers and funders use or require ORCiD, reducing the need to keep track of multiple identifiers for different platforms.
  • Your ORCiD can connect with other scholarly ID systems, such as Web of Science and Scopus.

Control your profile and privacy settings.

  • You determine the visibility setting for your own ORCiD record data. You control who views your ORCiD information.
  • You determine a list of trusted parties that you can authorize to connect to your ORCID record.
  • Connections and permissions require explicit action on your part. Examples of trusted parties include universities, research organizations, funders, publishers and individuals.

Use ORCID to update and link to your Biosketch to fulfill funder mandates.

A biographical sketch or biosketch is a document highlighting the qualifications of key personnel for a specific role in a proposed grant project. Both the NIH and the NSF require a biosketch for senior or key personnel applying for and renewing grants with each agency. Find out how to connect them.

As of June 1, 2020NSF has indicated that only PDFs for biographical sketches that are generated through the use of an NSF-approved format will be accepted. You can generate these PDFs via the SciENcv tool.  Please see NSF's updated memo stating this new requirement.
