Kanopy

How to access and request Kanopy streaming video content. Plus other streaming video services available.

Changes to Kanopy access

Kanopy is one of several streaming video services that the libary offers that includes documentaries and feature films operating on a for-lease model. Leases for academic institutions can be for one or three years and costs vary accordingly.

The UO Libraries began mediating access to films through the Kanopy Streaming Services on July 1, 2019. Kanopy provides a wide range of films for use in teaching and research, and the service proved to be overwhelmingly popular. As a result, costs for Kanopy continued to escalate significantly over time and unlimited access was no longer sustainable.

While mediation will help pace spending and result in better stewardship of university funds, the campus community will still be able to access a great deal of content. The portions of the Janus/Criterion collection that Kanopy licenses will remain available for unlimited use.

Kanopy titles may be requested for lease by:

  • UO faculty for use in a course or research
  • GEs for use in a course
  • Graduate students for research

In order to contain costs, undergraduate students, UO staff that are not teaching classes, emeritus faculty, and the general public will not be able to request the lease of a title. Undergraduate students that need access to a film for classwork need to discuss the need for the film with their instructor, who would then need to decide if a request should be made.
