This guide is designed to help Writing 123 students utilize research tools to seek, find, and utilize law related primary and secondary sources.
Secondary sources help us better understand primary legal documents. Secondary sources include:
Constitution- "The Constitution is the supreme law of the land in the United States."
Federal Statutes- "Statutes, also known as acts, are laws passed by a legislature. Federal statutes are laws enacted by Congress with (and in some circumstances without) the approval of the President."
Supreme Court Decisions- "The outcome of a proceeding before a judge, arbitrator, government agency, or other legal tribunal."
Agency Regulations- "A rule, adopted under authority granted by a statute, issued by a municipal, county, state, or federal agency. Although not laws, they have the force of law and often include penalties for violations. Regulations are not generally published in the books that contain state statutes or federal laws, but often must be obtained from the agency."
